Google has announced that, Google Reader will support for W3C’s ARIA ( Accessible Rich Internet Application ). As a move towards ARIA support, Google Reader can be made read for your through the following applications

  • Firefox 3 - Comes with inbuilt feature for voice.
  • Fire Vox - A browser extension for Firefox 2.0

Google says

ARIA support in Google Reader is designed to help end-users experience the benefits of a powerful Web-2.0 application, while giving browser implementers and adaptive technology vendors a real-world application on which to test their implementations.

How does Google Reader makes the plugin to read the feeds.

Try opening Google reader in above said browser or browser with plugin. It will try reading a hidden link in the Google Reader and make sure that it supports ARIA.

If you open up the reader in Source mode you will find the following line.

<a href="/reader/axs" mce_href="/reader/axs" class="offscreen">Click here for ARIA enhanced Google Reader.<a/>

Once the screen-reader software recognizes this line, then it will start reading the Google Reader feeds for you.

Happy reading!
